WHAT DOES A DOULA DO?
As a Birth Doula, I provide you and your partner with physical, emotional, and educational support during pregnancy, labor and childbirth.
As your Professional Doula I provide labor support throughout the birth process. Physical support may include massage, relaxation, breathing techniques, positioning, and other comfort measures. Emotionally, I understand the feelings and emotions that accompany labor. I can help you to process these feelings in a manner that is respectful of you and your unique emotional needs. I have spent the past 24 years learning everything I can about birth and postpartum. I bring all of that education to your birth experience. It's like having your own birth tour guide along with you. I understand the process, language, and culture of the birth environment, both at the hospital and at home, and will expertly guide you through your birth experience.
As your Doula I complete the birth team. Unlike a doctor, midwife, or nurse, I perform no medical tasks. This allows me to focus my attention solely on you, your needs, and the needs of your partner. Unlike a father or birth partner, I develop a professional relationship with you. I am caring, considerate, compassionate, and concerned, but we do not share a deep emotional bond. That role belongs to your husband/partner/significant other. This allows me to support you without influencing decisions based on my emotional connection to you. Having me as you doula allows you to have both a support person to provide evidence-based information and suggestions, while having your partner/coach there to provide the level of comfort and reassurance that only someone with a close bond to you can provide. As your Doula, I foster and encourage the amazing dynamic between you and your partner. I enhance and support their crucial role in your birth experience.
I work with your birth partner to assist with comforting you mother during your labor. It is my job to remain calm and objective and to help remove any fears you may have.
As your Birth Doula, my goal is to help you to have the best birth experience possible. I support you in your birth choices. Whether you desire a non-medicated birth or plan on receiving an epidural or other medication for pain relief, a doula can help you to achieve the best birth experience possible.
Pregnant women desiring a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) can especially benefit from doula support. I also provide cesarean birth doula services for women who wish to make their cesarean delivery the best possible birth for themselves and their baby.
