What is a Doula?

The word "Doula" is from the Greek referring to a female servant, or a woman who helps other women.

A Birth Doula provides physical and emotional support to a woman and her partner during pregnancy, labor and childbirth.

A Professional Doula provides labor support throughout the birth process, which may include massage, relaxation, breathing techniques, positioning, and other comfort measures. A Doula is not a doctor, midwife, nurse or father. Each of these important people have their own special role to play during labor.

A Doula completes the birth team. Unlike a doctor, midwife, or nurse, a doula performs no medical tasks. This allows her to focus her attention solely on the birthing woman's needs and the needs of her partner. Unlike a father or birth partner, the doula does not share a deep emotional bond with the laboring woman. This bond forms a level of comfort and reassurance that only they can provide. A Doula does not take the place of the labor coach or detract from their important role, instead she enhances it.

The Doula works with the birth partner to assist with comforting the mother during her labor.  It is the Doula's job to remain calm and objective and to help remove any fears the birthing couple may have.

As your Birth Doula, my goal is to help you to have the best birth experience possible.  I support women in their birth choices.  Whether you desire a non-medicated birth or plan on receiving an epidural or other medication for pain relief, a doula can help you to achieve the best birth experience possible.

Pregnant women desiring a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) can especially benefit from doula support. I also provide cesarean birth doula services for women who wish to make their cesarean delivery the best possible birth for themselves and their baby.

Doulas have been supporting women during childbirth for as long as women have been giving birth. It is my joy, honor, and privilege to serve birthing women and their partners as a Doula.
